Basic Ten Series
The basic Rolfing series consists of ten sessions, each lasting between 60 and 90 minutes. Each Rolfing session builds upon the results of the previous one, so that the results are cumulative.
Sessions 1-3
The first cluster of focuses on the sleeve or the most superficial layers of fascia with the idea of Breath, Foundational Support and Dimensional Support
Specifically, the first session is devoted to enhancing the quality of breath with work on the arms, ribcage and diaphragm. Opening is also started along the upper leg, hamstrings, neck and spine.
The second session helps give the body a stable foundation by balancing the foot and muscles of the lower leg.
The third session typically involves a “side view” for an understanding of how the head, shoulder girdle, and hips are positionally related to one another when standing under the influence of gravity.
Sessions 4-7
The second group works the “core” which Rolfers define as structures that lie close to the spine. The focus is on lift or lengthening of the mid-line and back.
Session four territory extends from the inside arch of the foot and up the leg, to the bottom of the pelvis.
The fifth session is concerned with balancing surface and deep abdominal muscles to the curve of the back.
Session six seeks to enlist more support and moment from the legs, pelvis and lower back,so its territory is the bottom of feet to back of head while the seventh session turns its sole attention to the neck and head.
Sessions 8-10
The remaining sessions 8-10 Integration” is emphasized the practitioner shifts to organize and align the body as a whole, resulting in better balance and freedom of movement.
During sessions eight and nine, the practitioner determines how best to achieve this integration, as the protocol is unique for each individual.
The tenth and final session is also one of integration, but more importantly, serves to inspire a sense of order and balance.
Following completion of the basic series of Rolfing and an integration period of six months to a year, clients often return to further the work they have received with three to five advanced sessions or Movement Integration session conducted by an advanced Rolfer.

Who is a Qualified Rolfer?
Your Rolfer is a graduate of the Dr Ida Rolf Institute® of Structural Integration (DIRI) founded by Dr. Ida P. Rolf. Its faculty includes instructors originally selected and trained by Dr. Rolf to carry on her work.
Certified Rolfers undergo a training program which is considered “postgraduate” in nature. The training includes course work in Anatomy, Physiology, Kinesiology, etc. Each student needs to demonstrate both structural understanding and hands-on ability. Rolfers are committed in writing to a program of continuing education, and must gain advanced training within seven years of their initial certification.
Rolfers are governed by a code of ethics and standards. In order to identify themselves as “Rolfers” they must be members in good standing. The Dr Ida Rolf Institute is the sole certifying agency. A directory of certified Rolfers is published by the Rolf Institute and is free upon request. (www.rolf.org)
